RULIV facilitated the development of the above plans using the participatory approach. The co-operative farms have 32 and 37 member households respectively and are situated on a 2029 ha farm 5km from Indwe in the Emalahleni local municipality area in the Chris Hani District Municipality. The business plans provided a framework for the establishment of co-operatives to guide decision-making and future actions together with a framework for government departments to support such co-operatives. The plans included the requirements for sustainable business operations and the envisaged financial returns. The communities have subsequently constituted themselves as the Delindlala Farmers’ Co-operative producing diary, sheep, beef, vegetables and broilers and they are a beneficiary community of a SURUDEC grant (see page 8 for more on SURUDEC projects).
